God blessed me to meet this mother of poetry when I was a 20 year old trying to know the sound of words moving from my mind to the page. She encouraged me as I walked through the light and the dark. She allowed me to rest on the roof of her home, to dream poetry, and to write. On September 6, 2016, she taught me another lesson–Givers always give–no matter what is happening around or to them. On this September 9, 2016, I thank God for her 82 years. In Sonia Sanchez, God has given the world a gem who calls on all of us who are blessed to sit at her feet or hear her speak or read her works to experience the fullness of humanity.
